Currently Lyndi Sales is working with waste paper, a material discarded and its potential underestimated. She uses it to create something evocative and intricate. The Asian tradition of paper burning as a sacrifice to our ancestors is another element in her recent work. She explores the fragility of life and she makes specific reference to the Helderberg plane crash. A fire onboard a Boeing 747 caused the South African SAA plane to crash, resulting in 159 lost lives. The cause is still controversial and unresolved. It is suspected that the Apartheid government was secretly importing highly flammable substances on a passenger airline at a time when there were sanctions against the country. South African currency, playing cards, SAA boarding passes and lotto coupons remind us of the gamble and unlucky fate of the passengers.
