Ivano Vitali starts by ripping a newspaper into strips. By overlapping the two ends of the strips he twists them together into a thread. He avoids using glue because the thread would lose softness and elasticity, and after drying, it would be stiff and difficult to be knit. He never adds colours. The only colours he uses are those he finds on the printed paper. Sometimes the background is already coloured, other times he selects pages of advertisements in a certain colour, which he then twists into threads. All of his paperthreads are wind into large paperballs. He then knits, crochets or weaves (on a loom) the thread, using traditional techniques.
