Paper has a distinct character for Annette Wimmershoff. The production of paper out of an amorphous pulp results in a product full of special qualities: it’s lightweight and thin, yet solid and layered. In her work, she creates volume by rolling, bending and folding paper. Through all this, the material always maintains its skin-like two-dimensional quality.
Paper is directional. In comparison to fabric, plastic or rubber skin, it is not easily bent in more than one direction without tearing. In her sculptures, she creates shapes by layering and gluing pieces of paper. Yet, even in the more complex spatial objects, the characteristic directional quality of the material plays an important part.
